Multilingualism and multiculturalism
Students who speak more than one language can more easily adapt in contexts that are increasingly multiethnic and multicultural. The ultimate goals of the Collegio’s multilingual learning paths are in line with the guidelines for European citizenship and the new CEFR descriptors, which indicate linguistic mediation as an added skill for the future.Scuola dell'infanzia

The learning path
ENGLISH
Starting at the age of two, the children acquire English language skills naturally and effortlessly. The project is enriched by materials from the Jolly Phonics learning program, which concentrates on discriminating phonemes. When they leave the Preschool, the children will be able to practice the bilingualism proposed in the Primary School.
CHINESE
The Chinese language program, introduced in 2013/2014, consists of several modules, subdivided amongst the three years of Preschool. Lessons given by the native Chinese (Mandarin) speakers go beyond the language per se, including games and traditional storytelling.
Scuola primaria
6 - 11 anniIn today’s increasingly interconnected society, even the Primary School has an international approach, and we try to teach our pupils to be global citizens, with no linguistic barriers to self-realization.
The learning path
ENGLISH
The Primary School is a Charter school, and thus offers a curriculum equivalent to that of Italian public schools. However, the teaching of English is expanded, and divided in two alternative paths:
The Cambridge classes study English as a second language (L2), for a total of 20 hours taught in Italian and 10 hours taught in English.
In the intercultural program, the hours are instead divided evenly between Italian and native English-speaking teachers, who teach English as a first language (L1).

The constant discussion, the readings and the numerous activities will prepare students for future cultural exchanges, concrete experiences of not only linguistic but also personal growth.
The learning path
ENGLISH
The English language offering at Collegio San Carlo gives students a choice between two paths: Cambridge Secondary 1 English as a Second Language or the intercultural program. The first, utilizing a creative and active approach, allows students to learn to communicate using the four linguistic skills through the use of narrative and expository texts, writing paragraphs and summarizing texts. The second instead focuses on comprehension, oral and written production, through the study of narrative texts, essay writing, debates and oral argumentation. The key is the international exchange program with Maryland and Massachussets

Licei
14 - 19 anniThe course offers students an opportunity to enhance their linguistic competence and knowledge up to the level of C1 (first language) or B2 (second language), without ever overlooking the multicultural and multilingual horizons of today’s world. Thanks to specifically designed activities, like reading the leading foreign newspapers in class and collaborations with outside partners, each student’s needs are met in full, especially in light of a future that may include study and work abroad. All high school students can obtain the following certifications: FCE (second year) IELTS (fourth year) DELF (second year) DELE (second year). Preparation for all the certification exams has been, for many years now, an integral part of the morning classroom curriculum.
The learning path
ENGLISH
The English language course has as its objective the achievement of level C1 competence at the end of the fourth year. The public speaking and writing programs allow students to develop their skills and knowledge in a way that will prove useful to them in the world outside school. The various interdisciplinary projects in collaboration with other high school departments, attention to what is happening in the world around us and the constant use of authentic documents are the key instruments for reaching those objectives. Preparation for the certifications proposed (FCE-IELTS) is conducted in class during regular school hours.

Studying the sciences and the social sciences in English enhances students’ linguistic proficiency, develops their confidence and gives them confidence to pursue university courses and careers in an international environment.
All students study their best language at native speaker level and another at acquisition level. They can also study a third language if they wish. This increases their cultural understanding and enables them to explore globally significant ideas in different languages throughout the programme.
